It’s spring at The GreenMount School, a small K-8 independent school located in the Remington neighborhood in Baltimore City. A mother fox and her babies have made their home close to the school, and they have been able to observe them as they begin to grow up! In the Kindergarten room, there are nine new baby chicks that have hatched. The native plant garden is blooming and all the students are excitedly preparing for the end of the year—from Field Day, with games, sports, and tug-of-war; to the final theme event, where all the students, Kindergarteners through 8th graders, will show off what they’ve learned.
At GreenMount, learners of all ages thrive because lessons encourage active participation, provide exciting challenges, engage personal interests, spark curiosity, inspire wonder, and leave students with new questions to answer. All grades and subjects at The GreenMount School follow an inquiry-based and project-based model of instruction that engages students in making real-world connections to classroom learning. From field trips that explore the impact of crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay to projects that investigate the role of rock music in the civil rights movement, teachers promote deeper understanding of complex systems as students engage in problem-solving and experiential learning.
In Kindergarten, students are reading books and poems about the baby chicks they are hatching! First graders are crushing their reading groups, and working hard on math manipulatives. Meanwhile, 2nd and 3rd grade worked with MICA students creating album covers and caricatures of a rock star. Over in the 4th and 5th grade classrooms, students are creating a rock and roll hall of fame, dressing up like the band or artist they have chosen and writing a biography about them. Middle school students have been diving deep into the rock and roll theme, as well, with field trips to the Ottobar and WTMD. Local indie rock band Super City did a music residency, writing and performing songs with each grade. The 7th grade visited the Steinbruck Center in Washington DC, where they worked with groups serving unhoused people. And now they are about to leave for outdoor education center Echo Hill for a three-day camping trip. Meanwhile, the 8th grade will be heading to Puerto Rico, where they will do a mural tour of the city, experience the bioluminescent bay, and learn all about the culture and food of Puerto Rico.
